When an Iranian girl reaches the age of nine, she is considered old enough to start observing “her duties”. Fest of Duty follows such girls during a religious ceremony designed to remind them of their Islamic beliefs. Eight years later, the director comes back to meet two of the girls again. While Maryam wears her hijab with conviction, Melika wants to be a famous actress. However, the nuances of the documentary offer a less clear-cut insight.
Born in Tehran, Firouzeh Khosrovani finished her artistic studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and made her debut Life Train (2004), followed by numerous international artistic projects. Fest of Duty is Firouzeh’s latest delicately nuanced documentary work which was screened at IDFA as well as many other similarly prestigious international film festivals.
